I was deeply disappointed with the news that Brixham Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre is to close. South Devon will continue to have rescue services such as cliff rescue teams, the RNLI and other valued volunteers such as the Hope Cove Rescue Boat and Coastwatch but these have always relied upon the expert support from our Rescue Coordinators. I want to see our coastguards given equal access to posts in Falmouth and Fareham because ultimately local knowledge is held by the people not the buildings and I am seeking reassurances that these 25 highly professional staff will be retained in the service.
